Assumptions
- Strips per wall = wall width ÷ roll width, rounded up.
- Strip length = wall height rounded up to the pattern repeat, plus the trim allowance.
- Strips are packed into whole rolls, longest first, so a shorter strip can use an offcut.
Why area-based estimates get wallpaper wrong
Dividing the wall area by the roll area ignores how wallpaper is actually hung: in full-height strips that each lose some length to the pattern repeat and trimming. A standard 33 ft roll fits three strips for an 8 ft wall, but with a 25 in pattern repeat each strip grows to about 8.7 ft and a 10.5 ft wall leaves room for only two. Counting real strips gives a more reliable number of rolls.
Frequently asked questions
How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Work out how many strips each wall needs (wall width divided by roll width), how long each strip is (wall height plus pattern repeat and trim), and how many strips fit in one roll. This calculator does that wall by wall and packs strips into whole rolls.
What is the pattern repeat?
It is the distance before the pattern starts again, printed on the roll label. Each strip must start at the same point of the pattern, so a large repeat makes every strip longer and wastes more paper.
Should I buy an extra roll?
Yes, it is common to buy one spare roll from the same batch number, because color can vary between batches.
Do I subtract doors and windows?
Subtract the width of full-height openings like doors. Small windows are usually not subtracted, because you still need full strips above and below them.
