Assumptions
- Tiles = area × (1 + waste) ÷ the area of one tile, rounded up.
- Grout uses the standard formula (L+W) ÷ (L×W) × thickness × joint × 1.6, plus 10%.
- Thinset bags use the coverage per bag you enter; it depends on the trowel size.
Grout depends on the tile, not just the area
A floor of small mosaic tiles can need several times more grout than the same floor in large-format tile, because there are many more joints. That is why the grout amount here is calculated from the tile length, width and thickness and the joint width, instead of a flat amount per square foot.
Frequently asked questions
How many tiles do I need?
Divide the area to tile, plus a waste allowance, by the area of one tile and round up. Use about 10% waste for a straight layout, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone or large tiles in small rooms.
How much grout do I need?
It depends on the tile size, tile thickness and joint width. Smaller tiles and wider joints need much more grout. The calculator uses the standard manufacturer formula and adds 10% for waste.
How much thinset do I need?
Check the bag: coverage depends on the notch size of your trowel. Larger tiles need a bigger notch and more thinset per square foot.
Can I use this for wall tile?
Yes. Enter each wall as an area with its width and the height you will tile, and subtract windows, tubs or vanities.
